Question

How can you display a file in xterm/aixterm?

Answer

Environment

AIX Version 5L

To display the last lines of a file that is continuously updating, enter the following:

     tail -f /file_name

To open a separate window displaying the last 10 lines of a file that is continuously updating, enter the following:

     xterm -e tail -f -10 /file_name

To access a target machine remotely, and display that xterm back to the local machine, enter the following:

     xterm -display :0.0 -e tail -f -10 /file_name

This will only succeed if the xhost command has been run on the local machine, and if the DISPLAY has been exported from the remote machine to the local machine.
